As a general rule, the more action a slot machine player brings to a casino, the more she can expect in terms of comps and freebies. Having a slot club membership is essential for getting rewarded for your casino action. "Action" is not a term used exclusively by slot machine gamblers. In poker, the word action refers to whether or not someone calls, raises, or folds. In sports betting, action refers to any kind of wager at all. But no matter what kind of gambling is involved, "action" always focuses on the act of betting. (Which makes sense, since "action" is derived from the verb "to act". And in gambling, the core of all acting is betting.

In gambling addiction literature, "action gambling" refers to a particular type of compulsive gambler's activity that is distinct from another type of gambler, the "escape gambler". Action gamblers typically play games of skill rather than games of pure chance, and action gamblers report a "high" that comes along with gambling. (As opposed to escape gamblers who report a type of numbness while they gamble. Escape gamblers tend to focus on games of pure chance too.)
