The bet amount is the money a player is risking on a particular bet. Some players choose to bet the amount throughout a slots session. This player presumably feels comfortable wagering this particular amount, which makes the bet exciting without burning through his or her bankroll too soon.

Other players modify their bet amount as their slots session continues. A player might wager more money after going on a hot streak, because that player has more money to wager. If that same player loses a lot of money early in a session, then the player might become more conservative with their bet amount as their bankroll shrinks.

On the other hand, some players decide to bet more when losing, because of the perception that their luck "has to turn around". This is a gambler's fallacy, since probability works on a macro scale far beyond most (or all) players' bankrolls. Conversely, a player who goes on a hot streak might become more conservative with their bet amount, because he or she wants to pocket the money already won.

Because of these different thought processes regarding the bet amount, the modification of bet size is often the subject of slot machine advice by slots experts. Each of these slots writers will suggest their own betting pattern, and give justification about why this bet amount works best in certain scenarios.

In fact, except in very rare situations, the odds do not change from one wager to the next on a particular slot machines, so there is no strategy to bet amount modification like one would have when counting cards in blackjack or holding a set of aces in Texas Hold'em. Instead, a slots player should continue to bet an amount which is the best combination of excitement and money management for them.
