The most common bonus feature on slot machines is the free spin bonus. Generally, when a player hits a number of scatter symbols on the reel game, this rewards the player with a set number of free spins. These are spins like any other paid spin on the slot machine, except the player doesn't have to pay coins to activate them.

There are many different types of bonus feature. Other bonus features might be wild symbol multipliers, "held" symbols where you get to keep advantageous reel symbol while spinning the others, sliding symbols from one reel to the next to help make up a winning reel combination. A few IGT games have the standard 3-reel game with a bonus 4th reel, which spins on bonus games to activate the progressive jackpot bonus.

Another common bonus feature is the bonus multiplier. Multipliers simply multiply the amount of coins won. If you've won 40 coins on a bonus game, then a 2x multiplier means you win 80 coins. If you collect a 3x multiplier, you win 120 coins. Some multipliers also stack, so if you get several multipliers in a row, you're coin amount can increase rapidly.

The list of possible bonus features is huge. Bonus features often come with the best graphics, sounds and music on a slot machine. These are meant to catch players' attention and draw in interest to the game.
