The credit meter might show the money a player has left to play in credits or coins. Whenever a player steps up to a slot machine, that player will deposit a certain amount of money or certain number of casino coins. Immediately, the credit meters shows the unplayed coin amount in that particular slots machine.

As the player makes bet after bet and plays spins after spin, the credit meter keeps a running tally of the player's coin amount. If the player wins coins on a spin, then the amount won is added into the credit meter tally. If a player loses a spin, then the amount of coins wagered is deducted from the credit meter total.

This makes the game easier for the slot machine player to track. It's fairly common for a gambler to place a certain amount of money in a slot machines -- say $20 -- and play until either hitting a jackpot or their money total drops to zero. The credit meter lets the player know his or her entire slots session how much money is left in the account.

When a player wants to finish a session on the slot machine, the player can hit a button to receive back the amount of coins displayed on the credit meter. Sometimes, this amount is paid back in coins dropped out of the slot machine. Often these days, the slot machine will print out a ticket with the amount of money displaying on the credit meter, which can then be traded in for the coin amount at the cashier's cage.
