John PatrickGambling author who has written several books on slot machine strategy. Return to the slot machine terms main page. John Patrick has made a living writing books on slot machines and other gambling topics. John Patrick has written four books about slot machines and released 25 books, revisions and updates in all. John Patrick has several themes he returns to in his slots books. One is the concept of money management, where a player manages his bankroll in such a way to avoid losing his entire bankroll (risk of ruin) while also locking in profits when the player is up. While money management can be used to apply to just about any form of gambling, slots money management is a major topic for slots experts, because there really are any other forms of strategy in the game. Money management in slot machine strategy involves loss limits and win goals. Before a slots session starts, John Patrick suggests the player set a loss limit. When the player has lost that predetermined amount on a slot machine, that player walks away from the machine. Win goals work in the other direction. When a player wins a certain amount in a slot machine session, the player walks away with his profits. In this way, the player is supposed to limit losses while ensuring wins when luck goes the player's way. In John Patrick's terms, the player is supposed to "grind out small winning sessions". Money management doesn't take much time to explain, so John Patrick pads his books with betting techniques. He might suggest starting with low bets and progresses through high bets during a session (the Ladder Method) or starting high and regressing the bet as the session continues (Down the Ladder Method). In reality, these betting systems don't make a lot of strategic sense, since the odds of winning on any particular spin in the Random Number Generator era of slot machines don't change from one spin to the next. Changing up one's betting pattern therefore has no real purpose, except to sell books. That being said, John Patrick has continued to sell enough books to continue his work as a gambling guru for decades. I would suggest that anyone who writes four books with slots tips probably can't be trusted, since there isn't much strategy to playing slot machines. You hit a button and hope for luck, and the lack of strategy combined with the chance for jackpots is one of the reasons so many casino gamblers find slot machines both relaxing and exciting at the same time. Slots experts are like self-help gurus; when their system doesn't work, it's because the person didn't apply the system correctly. It's never the fault of the system. Keep this in mind when reading any slot machine expert's advice. If you prefer to read anyway, here's the full John Patrick gambling library you'll find on Amazon. John Patrick on Slots
