Only the mechanic will be able to change the payoffs on casino slots. There are many limitations on when a casino can change the pay schedule on a slot machine. Unlike certain slots myths, a casino cannot flip a switch and to change the payouts. It requires a change in the random number generator computer chip.

Casinos cannot keep such computer chips laying around the casino, either. The casino must send to the manufacturer to acquire the correct computer chip. Due to state and federal gambling laws, casinos have other restrictions when having their mechanic change their slots payouts.

In certain jurisdictions, there are laws which state that casinos cannot allow players to play a slot machine for four minutes before or after a casino mechanic changes the payouts on that gaming machine.
