The pay line is the (originally) horizontal line that crossed the central part of the reel screen. If all three symbols on the payline looked the same icon, the player was likely to win a coin prize.

A machine has multiple paylines when there are other lines on the slot machine that pay off in the same way as the first payline. These paylines might exist as other horizontal paylines on the pay screen, diagonal pay lines which make an "X" across the slots screen, or even vertical paylines that move along one reel. In fact, there are even paylines which twist across the screen. These are used on machines with large numbers of multiple pay lines.

A common type of multiple line slot machine is the 9-line slot machine. This machine has 9 paylines, which pay off when any of the nine paylines have a winning combination. The variety of multiple line slots has grown in recent years, so there are multiple payline slot machines with up to 50 or 100 pay lines.

Generally on multiple line slots, a player must bet the maximum payline amount to qualify for the top prize on the slot machine. So if you want the primary jackpot on the slots game, you'll need to bet the maximum paylines.
