"Static" is a term used in everyday life for something which remains unchanged or unchanging, and is the opposite of something that is dynamic (defined as continuously changing). Therefore, a static jackpot is simply one which does not change.

The difference in a static jackpot and progressive jackpot is one of the major dividing lines in slot machine categorization. Machines with progressive jackpots are known as progressives or slant top slot machines. Machines with static jackpots are known as flat top slot machines or flat tops.

Generally, static jackpot do not pay out nearly as large a jackpot amount as a progressive jackpot. The tradeoff is that static jackpots are much more likely to be hit. Static slot machines tend to have more payouts per spin than a progressive jackpot, also. So with the progressive jackpot you have the excitement of hoping for a life-changing (or at least tax bracket changing) jackpot amount, while with the static jackpot you are likely to have the excitement of more winning spins, more winning sessions and more jackpots hit.
